Quilt Binding Width Chart
For many double-fold bindings made from quilting cotton, 2¼ to 2½ inches is a reasonable starting range. Choose based on the thickness of the quilt, the seam and folding method, and how narrow or wide you want the edge to appear—then test a short section before cutting every strip.
Compare common cut widths
These five cut widths are common reference points for double-fold, straight- or crosswise-grain binding. Each row is a starting point to test, not a guaranteed finished result.

5.1 cm, 5.7 cm, 7.0 cm, and 7.6 cm above are rounded to one decimal place. 6.35 cm is the exact conversion for 2½″, not a rounded figure. Exact conversions for all five widths: 2″ = 5.08 cm, 2¼″ = 5.715 cm, 2½″ = 6.35 cm, 2¾″ = 6.985 cm, 3″ = 7.62 cm.
Choose a starting point
- Method. Machine-finished, hand-finished, and stitch-in-the-ditch methods consume and reveal fabric differently, so the method comes first.
- Sandwich thickness. A thin quilt with low-loft batting behaves differently from a thick or high-loft sandwich — more bulk generally needs more wrap.
- Visual goal. Decide whether a narrow, conventional, or intentionally wide edge fits the project before picking a width.
- Seam and fold coordination. The attachment seam allowance and where the fold lands both have to be planned alongside the cut width, not chosen independently of it.
- Test. Confirm the combination on a short sample before committing to a full cutting plan (see below).
Why cut width does not guarantee finished width
The same cut width can finish differently on two different projects. Five factors combine to produce the visible result: how the strip is folded in half lengthwise, how much the attachment seam allowance consumes, how much fabric the "turn of cloth" around a thick or thin sandwich takes up, exactly where the fold lands once the binding is wrapped, and how the second edge is finished (machine or hand). None of these are fixed by the cut width alone.
For example, APQS describes cutting binding strips at 2½ inches for a machine-finished method, and notes that a particularly fluffy batting requires cutting wider strips to reach the same result — the same nominal cut width does not hold once bulk changes (APQS, "Machine binding a quilt").
Separately, a New Quilters tutorial gives a formula predicting that a 2½-inch strip sewn with a scant ¼-inch seam should finish near ¼ inch — but a reader comment on the same page reports a finished width closer to ⅜ inch from the same 2½-inch cut, attributing the difference to presser-foot width, thread thickness, and the quilt's own bulk (New Quilters, "How to Make Quilt Binding from Fabric Strips"). Two projects using the identical cut width can reasonably finish differently.
Test the width before cutting all strips
A 6- to 8-inch sample, sewn with the real materials, catches a mismatch before it costs a full set of strips:
- Cut one 6–8 inch length at the candidate cut width.
- Layer a small offcut of the actual quilt top, batting, and backing (or a representative equivalent) to the same thickness as the real project.
- Attach the sample using the intended seam allowance.
- Fold and finish the second edge using the intended finishing method.
- Check the result against the visual goal before cutting the remaining strips, and adjust the cut width if the sample runs narrower or wider than wanted.
Illustrative scenarios
These four scenarios are illustrative starting points, not prescriptions — every project still benefits from its own sample.
Ordinary quilting cotton
A quilt made from quilting-weight cotton with standard batting is the situation the common 2¼–2½ inch range is generally aimed at.
A narrow visual finish on a relatively thin quilt
A thinner sandwich gives more room to try a narrower cut width, such as 2 or 2¼ inches, for a slimmer edge — worth sampling before committing.
Machine finish where back coverage needs testing
When the binding is stitched from the front and caught by machine on the back, a slightly wider cut width can give more margin for the stitching to reliably catch the fold on the reverse side — but this should be confirmed on a sample, not assumed.
Flannel, fleece, decorative, or deliberately wide binding
Thicker or looser-woven fabrics, and intentionally decorative wide bindings, are where the 2¾–3 inch range is most often worth testing.
Common mistakes
- Treating 2½ inches as a universal, fixed requirement rather than a starting point.
- Widening the cut strip without also coordinating the seam allowance and fold.
- Assuming a wider strip is automatically easier to finish — extra fabric still has to be managed.
- Cutting every strip before sewing and checking a short sample.
Scope of this chart
This chart covers double-fold binding on straight-edged quilts, cut on the straight or crosswise fabric grain. It does not cover bias binding, curved or scalloped edges, single-fold binding, flange binding, piping, self-binding, or faced edges.
