Extra batting per side is an adjustable starting point, not a universal requirement. Your quilter's or quilting machine's instructions take precedence.

Usable batting width

The actual width of your batting roll available for cutting, as you measure it — there's no selvage deduction and no assumed standard width, since roll widths vary by manufacturer.

This calculator plans a single-piece cut from a batting roll only. It does not calculate packaged batting, pieced batting, or shrinkage.

Shrinkage depends on the batting product and laundering method. Consult your batting manufacturer if finished-size shrinkage matters for your project.
